SoundByte, I didn't mention hydrogen when I talked to Dave the first time. I just called him and left a message on his answering machine, telling him I remembered some more details and wanted him to call me back. We'll see what he says.
I'm interested to hear more about your theories about the Bible verse. (Who are you, anyway? You haven't signed any of your posts.) That verse, Revelation 3:16, is part of the Apostle John's vision in Revelation. John was exiled on Patmos, one of the Greek isles, when he saw the figure of Jesus, surrounded by angels. Jesus gave John instructions to write letters to seven major chruches in Greece and Asia Minor. The seventh and final letter was to the church in Laodicea, a wealthy town in southwestern Turkey. Jesus is rebuking the church for growing wealthy and complacent and ignoring their mission. The full verses in context (RSV, Rev. 3:14-22) are:
14 "And to the angel of the church in La-odice'a write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.
15 "'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot!
16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.
17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing; not knowing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
18 Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may be rich, and white garments to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and chasten; so be zealous and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
21 He who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'"
I know that's a lot of information, and probably more than we need to interpret the message that Dr. Painter was trying to give me. I wish I knew more about him, so I could make some guesses.
What do you mean when you ask if something had to get there instantaneously, how would you do it? Are you talking about a wormhole? Space Turtel suggested this a while back (I looked through the archive - the Journal, 2/21). Is this an idea I should pursue with Christine? I hope Dr. Painter calls soon, so I can talk about this with him.
